about

WHAT EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD KNOW About OUR Anthology. THIS Anthology. THE Anthology of American Folk Music was given form in 1952, the year the US brought A-bomb tests to televisions across the nation. The year Werner Von Braun proudly announced ’MAN WILL CONQUER SPACE SOON!’; the year that America re-elected Joe McCarthy so he could continue to compile his Anthology of Un-American Folk. Harry Truman left the office of the Presidency refusing to pardon the Rosenbergs about whose trial Jean Paul Sartre wrote: “[this is] a legal lynching which smears with blood a whole nation. By killing the Rosenbergs, you have quite simply tried to halt the progress of science by human sacrifice. Magic, witch-hunts, autos-da-fés, sacrifices– we are here getting to the point: your country is sick with fear ... you are afraid of the shadow of your own bomb." Almost a thousand protesters gathered and sang beneath the walls of Sing Sing on the winter solstice in 1952, pleading for mercy for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. We would be willing to wager that the majority of those good people owned or were likely soon to own a copy of Harry SMITH’s Anthology. Speaking of human sacrifice, just a few days before the summer solstice of 1952, Marvel Whiteside ‘Jack’ Parsons perished in an explosion down in his private chemical laboratory, perhaps an accident, a suicide, or even an assassination, hard to know. Jack Parson’s childhood spent reading chivalrous romances, fairy tales and science fiction led pretty directly to A.) pioneering work in rocket science accompanied by a tense and often ugly relationship with the US government, B.) his deputization as head of the American branch of Aleister Crowley’s occult Ordo Templi Orientis and C.) his misguided friendship with adventurer, con-artist and science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Six years before the fireball, six years before the Anthology of American Folk Music hit the shelves, Jack Parsons and L. Ron Hubbard did a series of magical experiments attempting to summon the Scarlet Whore of Revelations, the Thelemic goddess Babalon. Their efforts yielded strange weather and lights in the sky; meanwhile, up the coast in Berkeley, Harry SMITH was being first introduced to the glories of folk music record collecting by a professor from whom he was renting a room. And in 1952 for a bit of extra cash he released a mixtape of what he felt were the most important songs in his collection — "I felt social change would result from it. I'd been reading Plato’s Republic. He's jabbering about music, how you have to be careful about changing the music, because it might upset or destroy the government. Everybody gets out of step. You are not to arbitrarily change it because you may undermine the Empire State Building without knowing it. Of course, I thought it would do that... I imagined it as having some kind of social force for good".

2017 MORE YEN!

anti dram shop party #11

The feverishly anticipated followup to American Folk Music- ANTHOLOGY 2- was conceived 3,000 feet above sea level in The Hornet's Nest, Great Smoky Mountains, NC. The geographical challenges faced in completing this collection spanned no less than eight of the 13 original colonies. Final mixes were transmitted from the Croatan National Forest. It's hotsy-totsy!

Performed, produced, and illustrated by The Moolah Temple $tringband
